Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become.

Tradition
Songs of the North_ by Sigurd Olson:
Unless we keep the stream of the past with living significance for the
present, we not only have no past but we have no present. Tradition is
not a barren pride in a dead glory; tradition is something that provides
refreshment for the spirit. It is something that gives us deep assurance
and a sense of destiny and a determination to hold fast to the great
things that have been done through valor and imagination by those who
have gone before us.
-(Felix Frankfurter)
