Excessive use of rewards.

Many activities offer us intrinsic pleasures, but we can stifle our children's motivation by offering extrinsic rewards for what's already intrinsically motivation. Inappropriate use of material rewards stunts intrinsic motivation. It's a great way to teach children that learning is so unpleasant, you have to be bribed into doing it! And it can keep a creative child from experimenting for the sheer fun of discovering something new.
